This initial phase of editing is about letting you know how an intelligent reader might see your work on first impression. I’ll give you an idea of whether the thing “works” for the reader and whether or not your voice and style come across well and draw the reader in to your story or your idea or argument.
This is a broad-brush approach where I’ll skim your story or outline to see if it flows and makes sense in very general terms.
I’ve read many, many different types of writing over the years, from science fiction and fantasy to biography, social science, and psychology, so I am familiar as a reader and editor with a very broad range of writing. Although every evaluation of a narrative or analytical text is in large part subjective, I have done enough critical reading to give you a very good idea of whether or not your writing will appeal to the audience you are targeting.
I will call ’em like I see ’em, so you’ll get a truly independent and critical approach, not just a friend’s “Aww, that’s awesome,” or a critic’s ” that’ll never sell.” I will be honest but not dismissive and will let you know where you can tweak things to improve the appeal of your writing creation rather than leaving you with just a list of things that don’t work well.
This is my favorite part of the writing process, and I consider it a great privilege to help writers figure out what works for their intended audience as well as for themselves.
